From equations to the patient’s bedside: role of biomathematics in solving medical problems in real-life

Most of the known pathological processes take place across different levels of organization of the biological system, from the genetic, cellular, tissue and organ levels, through those of whole organisms and populations. The new technologies in molecular biosciences provide accessibility to extensive molecular and cellular data of these processes. The big challenge is now to explain how these data are translated into the ‘‘events’’ which may be clinically observed. Mathematical modeling can be an essential player in this domain, by reasoning biological processes, considering their spatio-temporal and multi-scale character. Multi-scale modeling already has contributed to the development of the “virtual patient’’ concept, which begins to have a genuine impact in optimizing and adjusting treatments to individual patient needs.

The workshop is devoted to mathematical modeling and analysis of disease processes, with a special focus on tumor growth and therapy. It will include lectures on diverse related subjects, such as gene expression, drug resistance, epidemiology, and molecular aspects of the healing process. Recent mathematical methodologies, results and theoretical analyses of the nonlinear disease dynamics will be discussed. We hope that during this workshop new perspectives and future cooperation between Israeli and Polish researchers will be formed, and expect the participants to benefit from sharing their ideas and initiating new liaisons.
